Anybody had experience with the Veloster Turbo? Is it fun? Is it reliable? Could it be a new car thT isn’t soulless? The perfect marriage of a “nice car” and a not boring car? See the truth is if I bought what I needed if get another Honda Fit. But I don’t want one. Maybe this would do, but I feel like I need RWD.However a blue liftback with a turbo and manual trans is all I’ve ever wanted.

Your last post said you were looking for RWD though. What’s the current criteria, exactly?

They aren’t super fun, but they are pretty reliable. Their steering is pretty terrible.

I had one for a rental recently. I actually liked it pretty well except you can’t see a thing out of it. I’m actually not sure if it was a turbo or not; it was decently quick but I hated the DSG. Get it it manual.

I have heard they feel underpowered, torque steer like crazy, and generally aren’t as good as the Focus ST or Golf GTI it was supposed to compete against.

I did a quick search since I recalled someone on Oppo either has or did have a Veloster Turbo:

https://oppositelock.kinja.com/2016-veloster-rally-edition-oppo-review-1745348910

I own the Kia version of this car, the Forte5 SX. The power is very good - straightline acceleration is brisk and very good for highway passing and more than enough for city use. Steering is somewhat vague but after driving it for a while you become accustomed to the bit of feel it does give you.

I personally haven’t had torque steer issues. It does very easily spin up the front tires, but I’m not sure if that’s a result of the suspension or tires (OEMs are Nexen all-seasons).

If you can get it at the right price and you want a reliable daily driver with a bit of heat, I think the 1.6T Hyundai/Kia cars are great value.

Biggest negative is probably fuel economy: on pure highway driving I can manage about 8 litres /100km (about 30 mpg) and city driving is around 12 litres/100km (which is about 20 mpg). I can tell you that most of that is due to my heavy foot - the power comes on in the low revs and it’s fun to use.

My friend’s got one, it’s a Rally Edition with the matte paint. He’s tuned his, and done every bolt on. It’s fun according to him, but he wishes he had gotten a GTI or Speed3 at times.

It’s okay. I’ve always found the veloster to be a discount Ford Focus but with worse seats and fit and finish. The automatic transmission is unbearably bad. Seriously one of the worst I’ve ever experienced. Manual is okay. I describe the engine as seeming to lack the power it claims it has. Like, it *has* 200hp but it’s a really mild 200hp. Especially when compared to something like the Fiesta ST.

I took one on a test drive last summer. I was pretty underwhelmed by it. The steering felt numb, and the suspension seemed like the engineers couldn’t quite find the correct balance between sporty and comfortable. It also had horrible blind spots in traffic. Finally, I didn’t care much for the seats up front.

It wasn’t all bad though. Power delivery was decent with the 6MT, and they can be had for very cheap. Appearances, I know, are subjective. But I do think they look rather cool. I’d choose it over a non-ST Ford hatchback, that’s for sure.

Ultimately, it’s not a bad car for the money. At that price and age, there aren’t a whole lot of new hatchbacks to compare it against. The Fiat 500 Abarth is close, while the Fiesta ST, Focus ST, Speed 3, and GTI all come in at a few thousand more.

Used M3 sedan. Practical, Manual, and RWD. What else would you need?

Or if you can give up the manual then the Infiniti G37 or Lexus IS/GS would be good choices. If you’re lucky you might be able to find a manual G37 sedan.

It’s possible, but you can’t deny the practicality of that third door, and liftback.

As long as it stays stock, they are plenty reliable. There are several over 150k, and a few at 200k. The motor is super reliable, and the trans is decent enough when left alone. There are couple of little things that can break, but they are repairable by yourself for cheap.

My girlfriend has one, its relatively fun and about as fast as a stock Fiesta. I like it, I would DD the car no problem, its not bad on gas, its compact, and it isnt slow. The auto trans leaves a bit to be desired, but the manual doesnt have that issue. They also dont look bad, though its very dependant on the person.

My veloster was great! Had an exhaust, intake, pierce cross brace, strut bar, pierce torsion bar and sway bar, 85a motor mounts and dog bone mount, Sparco wheels and upgraded brakes. Was hugely awesome at autocross and untouchable in the curves.

The sunshade is about 2" below the glass of the sunroof. Thus, my head brushes the sunshade. (Even with seat as low as possible.)

If they’d just designed the shade tobe further up, I’d seriously consider one.

... I am on the tall side, though. Not an issue for everyone.

Test drove one while searching for the husband’s current car and was left underwhelmed. I did like the interior of the higher trim cars, which was comfortable, more spacious than expected (back seats included), and decently optioned, but the driving experience was only marginally better than that of your average econobox. Sure, it’s moderately quick and it has a 6MT available, but its driving characteristics and power delivery both feel far less than the sum of its parts.

IMO it’ll do for a moderately interesting and economical runabout, but that’s about it. If you don’t mind the drop in practicality, a FR-S is infinitely more fun and some patience/travel can yield comparable examples for not a whole lot more coin.

The weird thing is I can’t find a single manual Toyobaru for sale in 300miles. At least not on CL. I should check autotrader

I definitely suggest checking AutoTrader/Cars.com/carguru. There’s usually at most 1-2 Toyobarus on craigslist in my area (and that’s after it does its “expanded search” thing). But checking the actual car sites will pull up 15-20.

Looks like that’s about right for that mileage. I ran a 2014 base model FR-S with 80k miles through KBB and this is the range it said.

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’ve been looking specifically for BRZs with the Limited trim (I need them heated seats) for when I go car shopping in the fall, they’re landing between $17,500 and $21,000 depending on mileage

Holy shit the blind spots are bad. Theres a U turn near my house on a highway. You quite literally cannot see a thing. My HEMIWagon has better visibility and its a couple feet longer. The looks arent bad. I think the second generation looks bettery than the initial release, theres a new facelift happening again, not sure how I feel about that, but we’ll see. The ‘14 we have is great so far. Peppy, and everything my girlfriend wanted.
